Mirto

Myrtle is an evergreen shrub common in the Mediterranean region and thrives abundantly in the wild up to almost 800 meters.. The lush plants have dark green leaves with an intense aromatic scent; the flowers, also fragrant, are white and not very large; the fruits, with numerous small seeds, are black-blue. An oil is extracted from the leaves of myrtle, which gives it balsamic, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory medicinal properties. Myrtle leaves can be used in the form of tinctures, syrups, balsamic sweets, and herbal teas.
According to Greek mythology, Myrsine was a young girl from Attica who, after beating a boy her own age in a gymnastic contest, killed her when he refused to accept defeat. The goddess Athena took pity on her and transformed her into a plant, which in her memory was named Myrtos. This gave rise to the Greek tradition of using myrtle to crown the winners of the Elis Games, Olympic competitions held in Elis, a city in the Peloponnese.
In the past, myrtle was considered a sacred plant to Aphrodite, a symbol of love and beauty.
For the Romans, it was among the plants considered symbolic of Rome, and in the Forum, an altar was dedicated to Venus Myrthea.
It symbolized fertility; crowns were made from it and placed on the heads of the newlyweds during the wedding banquet, as a wish for a peaceful, prolific, and loving life.
