Ginestra

In ancient Rome, for example, it was used for medicinal purposes: the Romans believed, in fact, that it had purifying properties and used it to treat a series of diseases; furthermore, it was often used in religious ceremonies, where it was burned as an offering to the Gods. In the Middle Ages, however, gorse was considered a symbol of protection: it was believed that planting a gorse near the front door protected the inhabitants from evil spirits. The symbolism of the gorse also extends to literature.

Right here on the slopes of Vesuvius, in the well-known Villa Ferrigni del Golden Mile, Leopardi wrote his penultimate lyric in 1836, published posthumously and still today among his most famous compositions: “Here on the arid slopes of the fearsome Vesuvius, bearer of destruction, which no other tree or flower gladdens with its appearance, spread your solitary bushes around, scented gorse, content to live in desert places. I have also seen you, with your trunks, adorn the desolate landscape surrounding the city that was once the mistress of men (Rome), and which, with its grave and silent appearance, seem to offer travelers testimony and remembrance of the lost power. Now I see you again on this soil, mistress of sad places, abandoned by all, and always companion of unhappy destinies".
